#ThinkfullyHabit: Break out from your echo chamber
The information sources we have available to us may be more varied than we initially think. Just how big is your own echo chamber?
Push out further, go broader and add more variety into the range of sources you use.
WHY?
A lot of people and organisations tend to use the same references and sources as everyone else in their same sector. When was the last time you looked wider for fresh insights?
If you want to lead change and stay on the front foot, it’s a great idea to go beyond the status quo of information and make sure it isn’t the ‘same old’ that everyone else is also using. It’s important to seek a wide range of information sources that provide different perspectives and insights.
Watch out for the natural tendency to emphasise information that confirms assumptions and ignore or overlook evidence which challenges or contradicts.
“The confirming-evidence bias not only affects where we go to collect evidence but also how we interpret the evidence we do receive, leading us to give too much weight to supporting information and too little to conflicting information.”
